Solar System

Kindergarten learned all about the Solar System! We spoke about the distance from each planet to the sun. We know that Earth is the 3rd closest planet! Anything closer to the sun could not have living things as it is too hot! We also spoke about astronauts and how they travel in space. We learned about the special outfits they wear, food they eat and lack of oxygen up in space. Kindergarten also learned about shuttles and that people have actually walked on the moon.
The children created a 3D solar system, painting each planet based on pictures they saw in books. They also labeled the planets on the board and decorated their own personal astronaut with a picture of each child's face included.  What a fun and hands on experience!

Building the City

The children are starting a new unit, Building the City. We have ready many books about how cities are built. We are fortunate to be able to see a building being built right before our eyes across the street from our school! Morah took us to the 4th floor to get a perfect view of the construction. We saw workers wearing hard hats, various types of trucks and spoke about what was going on that day.

We then made a picture illustrating what we saw. We will be making a time line of pictures in our room following the construction of this building. We will continue to illustrate what we see to create our own construction books.

Morah got toy construction trucks for us to use and build with in our block center!

Writing

Kindergarten continues to work on their writing skills. Below the children are learning how to form lowercase letters. We "write on the carpet" with our fingers both the capital and lowercase version of a letter while listening to our handwriting CD. In centers we created the lowercase letters out of beans, pennies and more.

We also do workbook review. The children are writing another book as well! Stay tuned to see how they come out. They are working really hard illustrating and writing them.

Reading

Kindergarten continues to enhance their reading and writing skills. Below the children are involved in various reading centers. We have been learning sight words which we will continue to build on the rest of the year. The children each have their own sight words boxes filled with index card to review.

We also use sight word sentence magnetic boards for review.

We use word family index cards and add magnetic letters to create new words to read.

Morah meets with the children in reading groups to help them use the strategies we learn to enhance their reading skills.

Subtraction Continues

The children have been enhancing their understanding of subtraction. Below we used time lines to answer subtraction questions.

Morah also put out examples for the children to do. They used various manipulative's to figure out the answer.
