Kindergarten has been learning all about measuring. We have spoken about things that are taller or shorter, large-medium-small, heavier or lighter. The children drew pictures to illustrate some of these ideas. We even had some of the students place each other in height order.
Part of measuring is learning to measure with non standard items such as with paper clips. Below the children are doing a worksheet using paper clips to measure the items.
Kindergarten is learning how to measure with rulers. We learned that a ruler has 12 inches on it and we start at the tip of the ruler when we measure. We call it the "pretend zero" as some rulers don't have the zero on it. Kindergarten also went on a scavenger hunt in the classroom to create an inspiration table they could be hands on with. Morah taped rulers down to the table and the children can come measure the various items they found.
