Kindergarten is reviewing their numbers and counting skills. We learned that by using a graph we can see how many of an item there are. By using a graph we can read it to find out various information like how many there are of something or the most or least popular of something. In kindergarten we wanted to know, What color is most liked in our class? Each student received a paper crayon to color their favorite color. We met back at the rug to graph each of our colors. Morah wrote the colors at the bottom of the graph and added each crayon to the appropriate column. By the end, we could see that more children like blue the best! Green came in the least with zero votes. We will continue to do this idea through the year as kindergarten graphs the weather daily. At the end of each month we see which type of weather was dominant.

Reviewing Beginning and Ending Sounds
Kindergarten has been reviewing letters and sounds. Below the children are playing magnetic games that show three different pictures on the top row, beneath each picture the children put pictures that started with the same sound as the one above. The children are also playing with a magnetic game that works the same only with ending sounds. Another center they are working at is practice with their handwriting. The children are copying lists such as grocery lists, toy, food, etc. Lastly, the children are playing with beginning sound stamps. They stamped a word with it's picture above and fill in the missing letter-sound. What a fun and hands on way to learn!
Scientists Use Many Tools
In continuing our first science unit, we have been learning all about what a scientist is and about the different types of tools they use. We know that scientists are very curious people who want to know more about various things. They pick a topic and learn more about it, doing experiments, visit various places and so on. We know that to do experiments, scientists need tools such a droppers, measuring cups, rulers, scales, funnels, tubes to collect in, goggles to protect their eyes, computers and a notebook to write down their findings. We in kindergarten are keeping a science notebook with pictures and information about our experiments. We also had the opportunity to use some of these tools that we spoke about.

The HIGH HOLIDAYS so far
It is almost the festival of SUKKOS. Lots of children in Kindergarten shared their experiences of being in a succah before. We watched the Sukkah at our school being going up slowly day by down near the playground. It is great to see such wonderful decorations up.
We read the book 'The Sukkah that I built' and the class made model sukkahs today out of a manipulative of their choice. The options included ego, playdough, cubes or blocks.
We had to make sure our sukkah had at least two walls
See photographs below of our creations
We read 'The Sukkah That I Built' on the carpet. |
Yom Kippur
We learned that Yom Kippur is the time for say sorry for anything we have done to upset Hashem or the people around us. Hashem is the king of the whole entire world and on Yom Kippur he decides what will happen to everyone.
We looked inside Morah Sharons magic bag to find a bath towel, a water bottle, perfume, slippers and hand cream. We talked about not wearing leather shoes, the adults not drinking or eating, not wearing perfume, cream or taking a bubble bath on the special day of Yom Kippur, so e can concentrate on Hashem only.
When we did Kappores with Rabbi Okunov, we knew that the rooster and hen he brought to school would take all our 'sorries' to Hashem.
We read the book 'The Hardest Word', where the Ziz bird learned that saying 'Sorry' can be very powerful. No matter how many mistakes we make, we can always try our best to make up for it and everything can be ok.
Morah Sharon dressed up like a King. Hashem is the King of the whole world and on Yom Kippur, he decides what will happen to everyone |
We read the book 'The Hardest Word'. The Ziz bird learned that saying Sorry' helps to fix up our mistakes. |
We only had 1 day of school before Rosh Hashana. It was our very first day of kindergarten too!
We talked about the whole world starting a new year just like our class. In the cards we made for Mum and Dad, we drew a picture of our hopes for the coming year. The class came up with some special suggestions such as hoping for lots of friends, good health and a year filled with love and helping each other.
We tasted Apples dipped in honey, challah dipped in honey, pomegranate seeds and wrote down what everybody in the class liked to taste. We eat pomegranates on Rosh Hashana to remind us we want a a year as full of mitzvos as the seeds fill the pomegranate.
A special visitor came to blow the Shofar and we sang Happy Birthday to the whole WORLD. Rosh Hashana is the birthday of the world and it is now 5774 years old!
Hope you enjoyed receiving the Shana Tova cards we made for you :)
Morah Sharon uwrapped the birthday present. Inside was the 'whole world'. Rosh Hashana is the birthday of the whole world. It is now 5774 years old! |
Our special visitor came to blow the shofar for us. We had a turn too! |
We eat special food on Rosh Hashana to remind us that we want a sweet new year! |
We tasted all the food from our lass Rosh Hashana table. We graphed which item each person enjoyed tasting. |
We drew a picture of our hope for the new year and stuck it into the Shana Tova cards for Mum and Dad |
