What's Been Happening in Alef Beis lessons???
We have already covered 5 letters since the start of the year!! Some of us have never learned any Hebrew letters before and already know so much.
In Mazel Day School, the activities focus on associating the name of the letter with the shape. We are already up to GIMMEL!! But this is a flashback of the lessons so far.
On our very first day of school, we learned about the letter ALEF. We made an alef puzzle to hang up at home and used little alef magnets to help us touch and feel the shape.
We had to select ONLY ALEF from the pool of letters in our game |
When we learned the letter BEIS - we did different activities to help us remember its shape. We played pin the BUTTON inside the BEIS and looked how the back has a piece which sticks out at the bottom.
See the pictures below for some of the fun we had at out our tables.
Pasting a BEIS puzzle. |
Forming a BEIS out of Playdough |
When we learned the letter VEIS
We covered up our belly button (because BEIS is the same as VEIS, just without his button, we collected only VEIS from the letters on the mat, shaped our body like a VEIS and Morah Sharon tried to trick us when she pointed to the letters and we had to name them.
At our tables, we practiced reading. These recognition sheets are so important! They help us remember the names of all the letters we learn.
Colouring VEIS and naming the letters on the page |
We filled in puffy or shiny or scratchy sticker ONLY at the BACK of the BEIS and VEIS. (A little piece of it sticks out) |
We stamped rows of the letter VEIS. |
When we learned the letter GIMMEL
We talked about how GIMMEL has running feet. It is always running to do a mitzvah. The children shaped their body like a Gimmel and shared which mitzvah they could run to perform.
Forming a gimmel puzzle |
Reading Big gimmel in a Big voice and small gimmel in a soft voice. |
We matched the BIG letter to the SMALL letter and identified each one. |
Playing 'pairs' just like our homework game. Turning over two cards and keeping them if they match. Remember to say the name of the letters that are turned over!! |
Stamping gimmel |
We even learned the letter SHIN even though its one of the last letters!
We spent one lesson learning the letter shin because shofar, shalom and shabbos all start with shin. These are words we used a lot!!
See the pictures below of how we shaped our bodies like a shin, made a shin out of dominoes, wrote the letter shin with white board markers and formed the shin out of paydough.
