Mezuzah Madness

In Judaic Studies and during Tfillah, we have been learning a lot of facts about the MEZUZAH.

We went on a Mezuzah Hunt around our school to see how many we could find.

We also created a mind map on the board, showing everything we know. Each class member then created their own mind map, which is now on display in our room.

Some facts we know include:

  • We hang it on all the doors in our home except the bathroom
  • The mezuzah scroll is written on parchment
  • It is written using a feather pen (quill) and black ink.
  • It contains the Shema and it keeps us safe.
  • We need to send it to a sofer to check it and make sure it is not damaged.
  • The Shema is also written in the Tefillin and the Torah.

We read a story about why the mezuzah is slanted. It helps us remember to compromise, being in the 'middle road' and the lesson is about listening to each other.

We created our own mezuzah scrolls with black 'ink' and feathers. We can't wait for a special visitor to come next week and show us a real mezuzah scroll!!

Meeting Zayin and Ches

CHES

Kindergarten spent a few extra days on CHES because it is such a fun and special letter. We learned that the word CHUPAH starts with Ches.

Morah Sharon dressed up as a Kallah (bride) and the CHES was the CHUPAH (wedding canopy).

Ariella N brought in a rose and we used it as the boquet. We also used the petals to decorate our own Chupah Ches.

Shaping Ches

See how many ways we shaped the ches, using blocks, our bodies, dominoes and stamps.

Ches

We played games and used  reading activity sheets to make sure we really know what ches looks like, even when mixed up with other letters..

PLAYING BINGO

Everybody is improving so
much and Morah Sharon is so proud of how hard Kindergarten is working.

Making our "Chupah Ches"

Everybody in the class made their own Chupah Ches. It was such a cool craft, see us working in the photos below.

ZAYIN

We had SO much fun mastering the letter ZAYIN!!

We shaped our bodies like zayin, learned that the words zemer and zahav (gold) start with this letter and even sang a song in Hebrew about a zebra.

Tracing the zayin shel zahav hiding in the 'liquid gold' gel was so much funWe played lots of games during when we broke off into centers and are so proud to know so many letters.

Counting 10-20 with Dominoes

The children reviewed their counting skill as well as learning to count to 20 by taking dominoes that had 10 dots and count them out. Next to the 10 dot domino was a 3 dot domino, showing that when we have a group of 10, we bunch it together and then see 3 ones left over, total making 13. Morah worked with the children in their workbooks to assess their progress and understanding of this.
