The children have been learning the Short A sound. We also introduced the AT word family. We have a special word family chart hanging on our reading bulletin board that we change for each word family. Morah asked the children to come sit at the rug, then wrote the word AT on the board. We lined the bottom of board with magnetic letters to place at the beginning of the AT. Then they had to read the word they created.
After rug time, the children divided up into centers. Some worked with index cards that said AT on it and placed magnetic, plastic letter next to it and practiced reading the words. They also worked with a beginning sounds game, placing other magnetic pieces under the main picture that started with the same sound. The last center was a stamp center. The children stamped words with pictures on a piece of paper and then used a pencil to fill in the missing sound.
